Academic Achievment

For three decades, the William SD Louey Educational Foundation has been helping academically outstanding Chinese students pursue their studies at top universities overseas. By offering support in the form of scholarships, the foundation has opened doors for students to gain access to the world’s top schools such as University of Cambridge University of Oxford, MiT and Harvard University.

The Foundation provides scholarships and bursaries to academically outstanding students from Hong Kong and Greater China, enabling them to pursue higher education at prestigious institutions overseas. Since its inception, it has supported 35 students with over HKD $60 million in funding, helping them study in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other international destinations. The Foundation has since expanded its reach to support promising students from other regions as well.

Providing Overseas Education

The William SD Louey Educational Foundation focused on students from mainland China, where access to top-tier education was limited. He personally interviewed candidates, seeking not only academic excellence but also leadership potential and communication skills, essential for navigating the global landscape.

Scholar Connection

William Louey remains deeply involved in the Foundation’s mission, staying connected with many of the scholars, who have gone on to contribute to advancements in various fields, including science, technology, and society.

Following the establishment of the foundation, In 1999, William Louey has a history of supporting higher education, particularly through institutions such as the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. In 1999, he was invited to join the committee of the China Oxford Scholarship Fund, an organisation dedicated to providing scholarships for students from China to study at Oxford.

In recognition of his and the foundation’s significant contributions, he was appointed as a Member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Circle at the University of Oxford in 2011, joining a select group of supporters committed to enhancing the university’s global impact.

Pay It Forward

The William SD Louey Educational Foundation has moved beyond typical scholarships—Through the foundation, William Louey sponsored trips to Europe, provided designer suits for school, and remained involved in each scholars lives. Even now, he continues to show genuine care and refuses any repayment, saying, “You don’t need to pay me back; I just want you to succeed and help others.”

In 2015, a group of former William SD Louey Educational Foundation scholars, now successful professionals, reunited and decided to set up their own scholarship fund. Inspired by Louey’s generosity, they have already helped 12 students begin degrees at Oxford, aiming to support talented youth who share their commitment to giving back—carrying forward the love they once received, inspired by the idea in the movie Pay it Forward.
