Marty Sun

Marty Sun first heard about the William SD Louey Scholarship through one of his Cambridge professors, who knew William and recognized Marty’s potential and financial need. Unlike many scholars selected in China to study in the UK, Marty was already at Cambridge when financial pressures threatened to interrupt his education. Determined to help Marty continue his studies, the professor reached out to William, who took a personal interest in Marty’s situation and arranged a phone call to learn about his ambitions and circumstances.

After speaking with Marty, William decided to offer his support through the William SD Louey Educational Foundation, supplementing aid from the Cambridge Overseas Trust. This sponsorship covered Marty’s tuition fees, freeing him to fully immerse himself in his studies and the Cambridge community. Through this support, Marty not only advanced in his academic journey but also became part of a vibrant network established by the Louey Foundation.

William’s education foundation is very unique because he was not just sponsoring his students to help with tuition fees. He was personally involved in their lives, understanding their needs and their circumstances.

Reflecting on his experiences, Marty describes William’s approach as uniquely personal and community-driven, far beyond financial backing. William maintained an active involvement in his scholars’ lives, creating a community that extended mentorship and guidance long after their studies.

For Marty, this support fostered a deep sense of belonging, easing the transition into life in the UK and encouraging him to contribute meaningfully within and beyond his academic environment.

One remarkable aspect of the Louey Scholarship is its ethos: there are no rigid conditions or expectations, only the encouragement to “pay it forward” when success is achieved. Marty internalised this value, understanding that giving back is not solely about monetary contributions but also about mentorship and supporting others on their journeys, much like William had done for him.

Inspired by William’s example, Marty was one of several scholars who helped establish their own “Pay it Forward” scholarship to support future students. Now a successful equities trader and hedge fund manager, Marty continues to embody this spirit of giving back. He has funded philanthropic projects, including building a school in Zambia and supporting educational initiatives across China.

His career in finance and commitment to philanthropy both reflect the impact of the scholarship—a chance not only to succeed but to uplift others along the way.
